Justin Davies - HAARVILLE - (Kelpies) - Book Review - Mr Ripley's Enchanted Books

                                                       Welcome to Haarvlle.

                If you've haarived, you've survived...

Are you ready for a fishy adventure or some limpet buns? Welcome to the latest book by jet-setter Justin Davies. Haarville will be published by Floris books based in Edinburgh on the 23rd February 2023. We love the cracking, golden shiny book cover by Francesca Ficorilli which is an absolute STUNNER.

It's time for you to dip your fins into the sea of tranquility and mayhem in this fantasy adventure with this glorious story. It's a UNIQUE and quirky blend of imagination and setting that will set you off on a mesmerising expedition that will have you glued to the pages. This has to be my favourite read so far this year; layered with dark humour, and a big perpetual mystery it is an amazing story. You will definitely ride the amberose roller-coaster storm as you follow the main characters of the book. Orphan (Manx Fearty), his best friend Fantoosh and drag-queen guardian Father G, face two unexpected arrivals on a little-known off-grid island town. It is notoriously difficult to get to with its rolling haar (mist) and fishy pongs that hide a powerful secret.

This brilliant well-written story transports you to a murky seaside town that is the life and soul of the party. The characters are colourful and heartwarming whilst the villains make it an edgy race to uncover secrets to save the family's legacy and Haarville from sinister newcomers. It's full of Gaelic charm, food references and some smashing world-building that will captivate the reader's imagination.

It's time to have your salt 'n' sauce with this battered treat in an epic outrageous narrative that will lift the human spirit regardless of age. We have a great action-packed MAGICAL ending that leaves a wanted expectation for more books in the series - at least we really hope this is the case!

Exclusive Book Cover Reveal: Roy Gill's - Daemon Parallel and Werewolf Parallel Published by Kelpies Teen

It is an absolute privilege for me to share with you, for the very first time, the new book covers for Roy Gill's spring book release. Indie based Edinburgh Floris Books are launching an exciting range of books for teenagers - these books will be published under the new imprint of Kelpies Teen. I'm sure that you'll agree that these covers are incredibly cool and will certainly captivate the teenage audience that they are intended for.

The two amazing covers that you can see are for Roy Gill's Daemon Parallel and Werewolf Parallel books. The second cover is for the new adventure which is part of the Parallel Series - personally, I just can't wait to read this once it has been published!

In my opinion, these are absolutely fantastic book covers. They really are book covers with attitude - bright, bold and eye catching. However, they also ooze a hint of 'don't read this book before bedtime' message as something might just get you in the night when you least expect it! These amazing book cover illustrations are the work of the talented illustrator Adrian Stone. To find out more about him and his work click Here

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the publisher and Roy for having faith in me and my blog to show these eye-catching beauties. It really is a privilege for me to share these covers with the digital world as well as being able to share a few of my thoughts with you. We would love to hear what you think so please get in touch.

To find out more about these books and the publishing company keep an eye out on their new KelpiesTeen Facebook page Here

Floris Kelpies Children's Prize Shortlist 2013

KP-logo-2013

Every year as part of the Kelpies Prize, we look for the best unpublished children’s fiction with a Scottish twist. Since February, our editors have been working their way through a record number of entries to find our three finalists for this year’s prize – and they certainly weren’t disappointed.
We’re delighted to announce that the books shortlisted for the Kelpies Prize 2013 are:
  • Never Back by Barbara Henderson
  • Attack of the Giant Robot Chickens by Alex McCall
  • The Great Moon Mission by Shona McQuilken
Never Back is an exciting Scottish thriller about a dangerous journey to remember who you really are. TJ and Levi have no memory of their life before New Dawn, brainwashed to forget by the Authorities. Can they discover their past before their present catches up with them?
Barbara Henderson has taught English and Drama, and started her own small puppetry business. She won the Nairn Festival Short Story Competition in 2012.
It’s an age-old question, but why did the chicken cross the road? To start the giant robot chicken apocalypse, of course. In Attack of the Giant Robot Chickens, there’s something fowl going on in Aberdeen as the city is terrorised by giant robotic chickens. But Jesse and his friends aren’t going to let the chickens rule the roost any longer …
Alex McCall grew up in Aberdeen, which may be why it is the first city he has destroyed in print. He has published several poetry and short story anthologies.
It’s an out-of-this world experience in The Great Moon Mission. Jimmy and his friends were expecting canoeing or sailing for this year’s class trip, not the chance to blast off into space! But as they begin to wonder what this mission is really about, Jimmy and his friends find themselves in a race against time, and slime, to save Earth from some little green men.
When her school careers advisor told her that being an author wasn’t a proper job, Shona McQuilken decided to become a scientist instead. The Great Moon Mission combines her two passions.
It won’t be long until you can find out which will be the latest addition to our Kelpies list. The winner of the Kelpies Prize 2013 will be announced at a ceremony at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Thursday 22nd August 2013.

Want to enter next year’s Prize?

Manuscripts are now invited for submission to the Kelpies Prize 2014. The deadline is 28 February 2014 and for full rules and guidelines, you can read more here.

book cover of

In the Land of Twilight

by

Astrid Lindgren

Goran has an injured leg and he gets bored spending so much time in bed. But when his mother turns out the light at dusk, Mr Lilyvale knocks on the window and takes him to the Land of Twilight. Goran and Mr Lilyvale walk and fly around Stockholm when people from the daytime world are sleeping.

Goran drives a tram and a bus. It doesnít matter that he has a bad leg in the Land of Twilight. They eat candy that grows on trees in the park, play with bear cubs and meet a moose. They even visit the King and Queen in the royal palace. At the end of their journey each night, Mr Lilyvale takes Goran home just before his mother comes in and turns on the light.

This delightful story about the power of the imagination is set in a magical version of Stockholm, and painted in beautiful twilight tones.

Annemarie Allan - Breaker - Book Review - Floris Kelpies Books

                    Breaker (Kelpies)

This is the second book that I have read by this author - the first being the author's debut book Hox ,which was shortlisted for the Royal Mail Awards. Both books have been really enjoyable as they've been written in a traditional and exciting way, full of adventurous escapades.

'Breaker' is a really fun read, aimed at the 8-12 audience and will appeal to both boys and girls. It is based on an environmental disaster, but has a dose of magical appeal through an eccentric professor and a set of twins, who have moved to the coast in North Berwick. The plot unfolds with an air of mystery that keeps you on your toes. The colourful characters are a joy to follow; the sense of community spirit is portrayed well throughout the book pulling the story together.

The best part of the book, without spoiling any of the story and giving anything away, is the underwater adventure. Again this is told through a wonderfully detailed way - I could read the pages over and over again as I was lost to the world of the sea.......
