Events: Jorvik Viking Festival Meets Francesca Simon - The Lost Gods - Merchant Adventurers’ Hall York

When gods become celebrities at JORVIK Viking Festival VIKING FESTIVAL
'The Lost Gods' with Francesca Simon -
19 February 2014 at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, York
What happens when Norse gods decide to become celebrities? A new book by children’s author Francesca Simon, creator of ‘Horrid Henry’, explores this very subject, as visitors to JORVIK Viking Festival’s mid-week ‘Meet-the-author’ event will find out on Wednesday 19 February at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.
‘The Lost Gods’ is the sequel to her 2011 book ‘The Sleeping Army’, which re imagined a world in which Norse mythology had been adopted as the primary religion in England. In the second book, with their popularity waning, Odin, Thor and the crew decide to jump on board the celebrity bandwagon, with hilarious consequences.

On Wednesday 19 February, children have the chance to meet the best-selling author as part of the JORVIK Viking Festival, ask questions about the Norse-inspired world she created and have their books signed.
Francesca’s talk is just one of the literary-themed events taking place as part of the 30th annual JORVIK Viking Festival. On Thursday 20 February, St Helen’s Church in York becomes the setting for an atmospheric retelling of Beowulf. Peter Carrington-Porter presents a modern adaptation of the historic poem about Norse monsters and myths, continuing the Viking tradition of storytelling in a space lit entirely by candles.

Author Joanne Harris will also be hosting a Norse-mythology themed event as part of the Festival, talking about her book “The Gospel of Loki” on Sunday 16 February at York Mansion House.
Prebooking is strongly advised for all events, as places are limited. Tickets are available online via the Festival website (www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk). The Lost Gods takes place at 2.30pm on 19 February at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, with tickets priced at just £5.00 per person. Beowulf by Candlelight is hosted at St Helen’s Church at 4.00pm and 7.30pm on Thursday 20 February. Tickets are £7.00 for adults, £5.00 for concessions and £4.00 for children. The Gospel of Loki takes place at York Mansion House at 2pm on Sunday 16 February. Tickets are £7.00 per person.

Tickets are also available for the JORVIK Viking Festival’s grand finale event at the Eye of York on Saturday 22 February. Gates open at 6.00pm, with entertainment from 6.45pm, including thrilling live battle action, sound and light effects with stunning pyrotechnics. Tickets are prices at £12.00 for adults or £9.50 for concessions, with a family ticket (up to four people) for £36.00.

More information and tickets are available online at www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk, or telephone bookings can be made by calling 01904 615505.

Michael Rosen Donates a Poem to be Translated Into Braille for RNIB

A giant braille poem will form an integral part of the RNIB Garden for children with sight loss, unveiled at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. The poem was written by children's author Michael Rosen, entitled Hand on a Bridge. Rosen will also be going to see the display on Monday 23rd May.
Visitors will be invited to feel the braille poem which reflects the overall theme of sight loss and children. It is hoped that this will prompt thought and discussion about the simple tools blind and partially sighted people use in order to live a fulfilling life. As well as including braille, garden designer Hervey-Brookes focuses on touch, scent and sound by using materials that have textural qualities, left in as natural a state as possible such as planed green oak, reclaimed Cotswold stone and Aberdeen granite.

The extract from Michael Rosen's poem:
Hand on the bridge
Feel the rhythm of the train
Hand on the window
Feel the rhythm of the rain
Hand on your heart
Feel the rhythm inside
Hand on your life
Feel the rhythm of time

The RNIB Garden celebrates the redevelopment of one of the charity's most cherished services, RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning. The Centre provides individualised care, education and therapies to children with complex needs and sight problems, who inspired the theme of the garden - the experience of the senses.

After the show, the garden will form a central part of the outdoor space at the RNIB Pears Centre and will be enjoyed by young people with complex needs and sight problems day after day.
This is the second time that Paul Hervey-Brookes has designed a garden for RHS Chelsea Flower Show. In 2010 Paul designed a garden exploring the theme of biodiversity from Bradstone and was awarded a Silver Medal.

The 2010 RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 24-28 May 2011.
The RNIB Garden site number is RHW35
The RNIB Garden has been funded by generous donations from a number of RNIB suppliers including Zurich, Bates Wells & Braithwaite and Walters Office World.
Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is the UK's leading charity offering information, support and advice to almost two million people with a sight problem. It is estimated that at least 30 per cent of people with complex needs may have a sight problem. RNIB works to radically improve the life chances of people who are blind and partially sighted and have learning disabilities.

Book synopsis for this great book.
Justin Thyme is a self-made billionaire living in a castle overlooking Loch Ness. The day he turns thirteen, he receives an anonymous gift: a fabulous watch with a puzzling message hidden on it. When he tells his father of his plans to build a time machine, the Laird of Thyme reveals tantalising fragments of past espionage and warns his son of a ruthless enemy keeping him under constant surveillance. At first, Justin fails to take Sir Willoughby seriously, but when a stranger arrives claiming to be his long-lost grandfather, Justin is wary - especially after his beloved Nanny insists the old man is an impostor. Justin's TV celebrity mother departs on a Congo expedition with her eccentric film crew and Eliza, a computer-literate gorilla. Whilst returning, Lady Henny is abducted, and clues prove that the kidnapper has inside information; someone in Thyme Castle must be a spy - or possibly Sir Willoughby's old enemy in disguise. Everyone is under suspicion: Justin's nervy tutor; their snooping housekeeper; the theatrical gardener; an ex-royal butler; and Mrs Kof, their freakishly strong cook. Suddenly, the race against time is on. Can Justin convert his vintage motorbike into a time machine, rescue his mum and discover the identity of their resident spy in less than a week...or will the dreaded Thyme Curse claim another life?

James Bond Museum - Keswick - England

We had a great day out in Keswick recently; one of things we did was take a visit to the Bond Museum. It's a great attraction to go to aswell as the Cars for the Stars museum, both of which are owned by the same person. A great family place to go to if you get the chance.

This article is taken from the JamesBond.org

Keswick’s James Bond Museum will feature numerous vehicles and gadgets that were used in the James Bond films, all from the private collection of Peter Nelson who has been collecting James Bond items for 20 years.

Press Release

An exciting new museum will open in the Lake District on the 5th of April 2009. The Bond Museum is the brainchild of Peter Nelson who has been collecting James Bond items for 20 years and now has the biggest private collection in the World. The museum will feature several Aston Martin and Lotus cars used in the Bond films along side many other vehicles including the actual Russian T55 main battle tank used in the film GoldenEye, as well as boats , planes and even a Bell Jetranger helicopter.

The 5th of April is also a very special date being the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Albert R (Cubby) Broccoli. As a tribute to the Bond producer Nelson will unveil a bust on that date at the museum.

Nelson has also collected many of the props from the films, several being donated by many of the actors and crew. One of the iconic items on display will be the original Colibri Golden Gun plus many Q gadgets. However, it is the vehicles, many of which have never been seen by the public which will form the centre piece of the museum.

Nelson also owns the now famous Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in the town, but because the current museum is too small to house his large collection of Bond vehicles it had to have a new purpose built site close by.

“This will be a museum dedicated to the fans of 007,” states Nelson, who was a school boy when he first read the books of Ian Fleming and later became a fan himself of the films. “Like many others I have grown up with James Bond and its fantastic that the franchise continues in the very capable hands of the Fleming family, Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson and family,” says Nelson.

Ask him who is his favourite Bond and he states that each Bond was perfect for that era however his favourite film is Goldfinger, simply because it features the gadget laden DB5 which he states is the greatest car ever made—he should know he has two!

But Nelson has had his problems building such a major attraction, namely the sheer cost of the project. When he required a further extension to his overdraft he sent a very ‘tongue in cheek’ fax to his bank manager stating that failure to comply with his request would result in demolition of the bank with his tank. When the fax was intercepted by one of the junior staff in the absence of the manager he thought it a serious threat and nearly called the police! However the manager eventually granted the payment without recourse to Nelson’s threat!

At one time Nelson thought about selling the entire collection and did approach Christies, but on reflection he felt that it would be a shame to split the collection up since it is one of great historic as well as cultural importance. “Fans of Bond will want to see this collection in it’s entirety” Nelson states. And he has ensured that the museum has been completed to a standard that will impress visitors and also help to promote the films and the books. Nelson said that he is re reading Fleming’s books and has been so impressed how well written they are. “New Bond books have been written, but you simply can’t equal Fleming: he was an outstanding author”, says Nelson. Nelson also states that he is a great admirer of the work of Cubby Broccoli who he sites as a genius in his ability in finding and attracting the very best cast and crew for the films. “The most amazing thing is that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have been able to carry on Cubby’s superb legacy extremely well indeed, which was no mean feat.” He is therefore sure that Bond will go on for many years to come.

The museum will be open from the 5th April 10am to 5pm. The unveiling of Nelsons bust of ‘Cubby’ at 10am on that morning.
