James Dashner - The 13th Reality - The Hunt For Dark Infinty

Mr Ripley's Review

This is the second book to be released in the 13th Reality Series by James Dashner. The story takes on a new adventure with Tick, Paul and Sofia forced to "wink" from Reality to Reality. Solving riddles and overcoming fear and danger with every test is the main theme. Tick and friends are fighting for survival as they are tested to the limits in this sophisticated world involving 13 realities. Mr.Chu is working on a mysterious new weapon called the Dark Infinity to rule all the realities. But he requires someone to help control the weapon he has invented.
It's another great story told in such detail, which gives the reader a sense of being in the story. As you delve through the pages the dark and sinister tone and feel becomes more evident. There are lots of twists and turns, including some James Bond gadgets. As with all great endings, the climax culminates in lots of action, drawing all the loose ends into a tidy knot. Recommended to anyone who loves a great read with a big Science Fiction feel. Four out of Five.

M.G Harris Joshua Files - Ice Shock Book Review

Mr Ripley's Review Thanks M.G for sending me the new Photo.

This is the second book written in the Joshua Files series entitled Ice Shock.
The story starts just a few months after Invisible City where we find Josh back home in Oxford. Josh embarks on another fast-paced adventure trying to find the answers to his father's death. Keeping with the Mayan Culture, the story revolves around the hidden city of EK Naab and the IX Codex which keeps the story moving. Josh makes a huge discovery first, then the story starts to take pace with a few twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages quickly.
I love the way M.G Harris has the ability to write a great story, putting all the action you would normally find in an Alex Rider book. I enjoyed reading this book, as you feel a part of the story. Joshua's survival, again keeps you gripped throughout. A great joy to read, I'm already looking forward to the next book.

Five out of Five, great adventure with imaginative characters which fit the story well. Amazing detail, referring to the Mexico and Mayan cultures, making the story stand out. I also like the idea of putting Josh's blog into the book to make the story more stylistic.

Synopsis
Josh is back home, trying to resume his normal life and make sense of his Mayan adventures. But soon it becomes clear that being back in Oxford doesn't mean Josh can escape his destiny. He's evenmore certain now that his father's death was no accident -- and he's starting to wonder if he can really trust his closest allies. But when he finds out a shocking secret, that's when the real adventure begins...

Barry Hutchison - Invisible Fiends - Bologna 2009

I am always looking ahead for great new books and I think this new series of books is something to keep your eye out for.

HarperCollins Children’s Books has bought INVISIBLE FIENDS, a debut series by B Hutchison. The six-book deal for world rights, including TV, film and merchandise, was concluded by Nick Lake, Commissioning Editor at HarperCollins, and Kathryn Ross at Fraser Ross Associates. Described as "Harry Potter meets Nightmare on Elm Street, it is "a fantastically original, darkly funny and shiver-inducing new horror series about what happens when 12-year-old Kyle’s imaginary friend from childhood comes back to life". The series is aimed at the 9+ age group, and the first book, Invisible Fiends: Mr Mumbles, is scheduled for publication in early 2010. HarperCollins will be showing early proofs at this year’s Bologna Book Fair.

Lake describes it as "one of those rare projects that combine a fresh premise, wonderfully accessible writing, and the sort of deft humour that makes the terrorsweats just about bearable. Anyone who likes laughing, or screaming, or preferably both at the same time, will love it."

Philip Caveney - Sebastian Darke - The Prince of Explorers

Mr Ripley's Review

Back in 2006, when the first book was unearthed from the book fair in Bologna, I looked forward to reading this story. Such a great ray of emerging titles were born from Derek Landy's - Skulduggery Plesant and Joanne Harris' - Runemarks, all making their deals at the fair.
So now we are on book three in the adventures of Sebastian Darke.

It starts out with Sebastian, Max and Cornelius venturing off into the deepest depths of the jungle in search of the legendary lost city of Mendip. Philip has written another great adventure, building on the characters' relationships with each other. This is another magical story with great detail; very well written. It has lots of humour and laughter as Sebastian becomes a jester once more. As the book gathers pace, the story takes on a new twist and I found myself feeling sad as the story came to a climax.
Another great read from cover to cover with this on-going adventure which keeps getting better and better. Five out of Five and I'd like to thank Philip for getting a copy of this book sent out to me. Many thanks.

Synopsis

Sebastian, Max and Cornelius are off on their most hazardous adventure yet. Deep in the dense jungles of the south they are searching for the legendary lost city of Mendip when their quest is rudely interrupted by a savage attack by a band of Gograth - armoured apelike beasts. Rescued by jungle girl Keera, they are taken to the village of the Jilith, a primitive tribe of warriors, who are themselves locked in a grim struggle for survival with the Gograth. Sebastian's arrival has been foretold in an ancient prophesy which states that the elf-Lord and his two companions will rid the Jilith of the curse of the Gograth forever. And if Sebastian, Max and Cornelius can achieve this Keera herself will guide them to the Lost City. But first our heroic trio must brave savage battles, hazardous journeys, attacks by fierce beasts and some of the worst jokes in history. This is a great short story written by a 10 year old boy.

About Will

Will Goddard is nearly 11 years old. He was born on Valentine’s Day 1998, some 17 weeks premature gaining him a Guinness Certificate for being Britain’s earliest surviving baby. Having battled through his first difficult years he showed an early love of reading, a skill he developed by reading the subtitles on television programmes. Why he wrote this book

I started the book by writing a chapter for homework. My family all said it was really good and wanted to know what happened next, so I carried on from there and eventually it turned.

Neil Gaiman - The Graveyard The Newbery Medal Winner 2009

This is the story how you make some one very very happy. I would like to say it's well deserved. The following Writing is taken from Neil Gaiman's personal journal...............This morning.

The great thing about having a dead day in a hotel after a long junket, and this Monday was one of those, is you have nothing to get up for. So I had a very long late lazy bath in the small hours of the morning, and then stayed up talking to a friend on the phone, and then I read...

I drifted off to sleep with a Jack Benny show playing on the iPod around 3:30 am. I set the alarm for 11.00 am because I didn't have anything to get up early for, and planned to wake a little before the alarm, and start writing. I closed my eyes...

And then the phone was ringing. I think it may have been ringing for some time. In fact, I thought as I surfaced, it had already rung and then stopped ringing once, which meant someone was calling to tell me something. Probably the hotel was burning down. I picked up the phone. It was my assistant, Lorraine, sleeping over at my place with a convalescent dog.

"Merrilee called, and she thinks someone is trying to get hold of you," she told me. I told her what time it was (viz. five thirty in the bloody morning here is she out of her mind some of us are trying to sleep here you know.) She said she knew what time it was in LA, and that Merrilee, who is my literary agent, sounded really definite that this was important.

I got out of bed. Checked voicemail. No, no-one was trying to get hold of me. I called home, to tell Lorraine that it was all nonsense -- "It's okay," she said. "They called here. They're on the other line. I'm giving them your cellphone number."

I was not yet sure what was going on or who was trying to do what. It was 5:45 in the morning. No-one had died, though, I was fairly certain of that. My cell-phone rang.

"Hello. This is Rose Trevino. I'm chair of the ALA Newbery Committee..." Oh. Newbery. Right. Cool. I may be an honors book or something. That would be nice, "and I have the voting members of the Newbery Committee here, and we want to tell you that your book..."

"THE GRAVEYARD BOOK," said fourteen loud voices, and I thought, I may be still asleep right now, but they probably don't do this, probably don't call people and sound so amazingly excited, for Honors books....

"...just won..."

"THE NEWBERY MEDAL" they chorused. They sounded really happy. I checked the hotel room because it seemed very likely that I was still fast asleep. It all looked reassuringly solid.

You are on a speakerphone with at least 14 teachers and librarians and suchlike great, wise and good people, I thought. Do not start swearing like you did when you got the Hugo. This was a wise thing to think because otherwise huge, mighty and fourletter swears were gathering. I mean, that's what they're for. I think I said, You mean it's Monday?

"You can tell your agent and your publisher, but no-one else," said Rose. "And it will be announced in about an hour."

And I fumfed and mumbled and said something of a thankyouthankyouthankyouokaythiswasworthbeingwokenupfor nature.

Then I phoned my agent and my publisher, both of whom seemed to have intuited my news already through secret methods, but it may have just been that I was calling them on this particular Monday morning (and, in retrospect, someone must have phoned someone to get my home phone number). (Merrilee-my-agent: "You didn't start swearing, did you?" Me: "No." Her: "Oh good.")

I called Maddy, spoke to her, and she was beyond delighted, and I told her to try not to tell anybody about it, and told her lovely mum, who was thrilled for me.

Then I got a phone call from Elyse, Harperchildren publicist, wanting to know if I could fly in from LA to New York to be on the Today Show tomorrow morning.

Andrew Mulligan - RIBBLESTROP

Mr Ripley's review

The story is set in a bizarre Boarding School with a bunch of odd pupils and even stranger teachers. This book is a great read, the story is quirky in its execution with great imaginative qualities which work really well. I love all of the characters in this book, as they each individually make the story. Whilst the descriptive work, Andrew has used, builds a brilliant picture. As I followed the story, I chuckled along the way with the funny moments. Whilst enduring the strange and unusual happenings; each working well with each other. I don't think you'll find another book like it! It's well worth a read; transcending from yet another great debut author. Five out of Five - great story, incredibly unique with an eye-catching cover. The pop-art style reflects the story within.

Synopsis

Roofless dormitories, distracted teachers and a lethally dangerous underground labyrinth - Ribblestrop's visionary headmaster is out of his depth even before the pupils arrive! And when they do - what a bunch! There's Sanchez, a Colombian gangster's son hiding from kidnappers; Millie, an excluded arsonist and self-confessed wild child; Caspar, the landlady's spoiled grandson; the helpful but hapless Sam and his best friend Ruskin, plus a handful of orphans from overseas, who are just happy to have beds - even if they are located in a roofless part of the building...Anything could happen - and anything does!
